Lighting, for paper cutouts, should be uniform UNLESS you're in a cave, or showing one area brighter than the other. It's the same principle as lighting in art.
It does feel underwhelming when your lighting looks like camera phone above the table; I've been there before with one old attempt at animation.

Surest way to do this is to keep practising drawing. Start by making your lines confident.
